The Psychopomps opens with a bicycle chase on the highway, with Janzen Hakkinen riding manically between cars dodging cops and his thoughts alike. When my former English teacher and good friend Sean asked me to score this scene, along with the rest of the action packed first chapter of his debut novel, for a potential short film, I said yes without hesitation, not knowing the first thing about what I was getting into. Over the month of frenetic writing that led to this music, I pulled from a wide swath of samples, influences, and techniques in order to produce something that is— if nothing else— quite unique. I chose to use samples quite deliberately, both because of my predilection towards beatmaking and because Sean left so many different musical and geographical markers in the text. I wanted to create a sense of place within the music, even if that place was just somewhere for me to hide from my own doubts, anxieties, and fears. Whether anyone else wants to spend time in that same place is anyone’s guess. There’s only one way to find out.
